Signal Processing for Severe-to-Profound Hearing Loss
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wide dynamic range compression has become the mostly used signal processing strategy for mild to moderate hearing losses although there is still some discussion going on regarding the details of such compression systems. Furthermore, sophisticated signal processing strategies such as automatic program selection, adaptive digital directional microphones and sophisticated noise canceling schemes have been developed and applied in modern digital hearing instruments. Digital technology offers a great deal of flexibility for easily designing and implementing new signal processing algorithms. The most common strategy applied with individuals who have severe-to-profound hearing loss has been to provide them with as much power as possible. However, so far few attempts have been undertaken to apply more sophisticated signal processing strategies with this segment of the hearing-impaired population. In this paper we will review existing knowledge on basic psychoacoustic mechanisms, speech perception as well as different approaches to optimally amplify and process sounds for the group of severely to profoundly hearing impaired subjects.

Background and Aim: Hearing impairment is one of the most common congenital defects. Unfortunately there have been no studies so far on the prevalence of various degrees of neonatal hearing, loss in Iran. As accurate determination of prevalence is crucial in estimating disease burden and planning subsequent interventions, we carried out this study to determine the prevalence of neonatal hearing...
متن کاملThe effect of cochlear implantation on the improvement of hearing performance in children suffering from profound hereditary and Non-hereditary hearing loss
Introduction: Hearing is one of the dominant senses of humans. In fact, human beings learn the language which is spoken in their environment and, then, develop the capability to speak. Cochlear implantation is introduced worldwide as a method for the treatment of the severe-to-profound sensory-neural hearing loss. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the effect of cochlear implantat...
متن کاملCornelia De Lange Syndrome and Cochlear Implantation
Introduction: Literature regarding the different degrees of hearing loss in patients with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CDLS) reports that half of the affected patients exhibit severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. We present the first pre-school child with CDLS who underwent cochlear implantation for congenital profound sensorineural hearing loss. Case Report: A 3-year-old boy with CD...

Meeting the needs of people with severe to profound hearing loss places enormous demands on a hearing instrument system. It has to make the most of narrowed residual dynamic range and the hearing instrument needs to accommodate marked individual differences in the optimal amplification strategy for compensating for severe to profound hearing loss. There also must be flexibly adjustable protecti...
متن کاملNasalance Scores of Sentences in Children with Hearing Loss
Background and purpose: Proper resonance is a major factor for the comprehension of speech in individuals with hearing loss. These people have low speech intelligibility caused by inappropriate resonance. Therefore, nasalance measurement is a principal aspect of the assessment of people with hearing loss. This study aimed at determining nasalance in children with hearing loss. Materials and me...
